Observe a balcony before planting
The conditions on a balcony can differ sharply from those at street level. Wind, reflected heat and shade from neighbouring buildings all affect a container. Spend a few days observing the space before choosing plants.
Record which parts receive direct light and which remain sheltered. Check building rules and safe load limits before placing heavy pots. Containers need drainage that will not damage the surface below or drip onto a neighbour’s space.
Start with a small number of plants suited to the actual conditions. A modest arrangement that can be watered and cared for consistently is a better experiment than a crowded first season.
