Learning the weight of a pot

The surface of a pot can look dry while the material below remains damp. Lifting a small container gently gives another clue. Compare its weight after watering and after it has had time to dry, using care with heavy or fragile pots.

Different plants and growing media need different routines, so this is an observation rather than a universal watering rule. Check the plant’s requirements and inspect drainage before adding more water. A saucer should not become an unnoticed reservoir.

Keep brief notes when trying a new container. Recording weather, watering and visible changes makes it easier to adjust one thing at a time.
